Goals

Warehouse inventory is generally an intensive process that requires hours of personnel moving to each position and each shelf, and often necessitates the use of forklifts to reach the highest positions, with the associated risks of working at height.

The objective of this project has been to explore the utility of indoor drones connected by 5G for conducting automatic inventories, seeking both efficiency in complete inventories and immediacy for specific and localized inventory needs.

Results

This project utilized two fundamental components: a drone solution from the company Dronomy, specialized in inventory solutions, and a private 5G network provided by Telefónica Tech to supply the necessary connectivity within the warehouse.

The Dronomy solution is based on launching automated missions from a software platform controlled by warehouse managers, which can be accessed remotely, allowing them to specify the positions they want to scan, and let the drone establish its flight route and execute it automatically, thus simplifying operations for warehouse personnel. The private network consisted of an “on-premise” solution operated by Telefónica Tech, with the support of Nearby Computing and Italtel services for network core integration, and running on Amazon’s Edge hardware called SnowBall Edge.

Testimonials

This Innovation project with Telefónica has allowed us to explore the possibilities that the drones ecosystem has to offer in conducting inventories, in order to achieve efficiencies in a process that is always laborious, as well as to understand the dynamics of deploying private 5G networks within a warehouse. These type of collaborations are essential to ensure that we maintain our competitive advantage through new technologies.
