CatEYE

Goals
The objective is to enable portable and automated solutions of preventive medicine that relieve specialized personnel from routine periodic review tasks, using technologies like 5G communications, AI, and Edge computing.
In this specific case, the goal has been to develop a solution that relieves specialist ophthalmologists from the routine task of reviewing a cataract to identify when it is “mature” for surgery, while ensuring that the solution is portable and can be moved to the patient’s location, increasing the reach of preventive medicine.

Results
CatEye is a device whose sole purpose is to determine if the patient has cataracts of a sufficient degree to recommend surgical intervention.
The device features a high-precision motorized camera that captures images of both eyes without the need for manual intervention. These images are sent via 5G connectivity to an Artificial Intelligence system hosted in Telefónica’s edge computing. The AI analyzes key ophthalmological parameters to determine if the patient shows early signs of cataracts or if the disease has progressed to the point of requiring surgery. The portability of the solution, in addition to extending the reach of preventive medicine, allows ophthalmologists to intervene only when necessary, thus scaling their capacity
