Telefónica Tech creates a data lake for water management in Asturias

• The technology company is developing, together with Xylem and Ídrica, the infrastructure that will allow the Principality, among other things, to monitor its water activity in real time and establish advanced analytical models with artificial intelligence to manage water and anticipate potential scenarios relating to the availability of water resources and meteorological incidents.

Telefónica Tech is developing the technological infrastructure for the creation of the revolutionary data lake that will allow the Principado de Asturias to optimise the management, advanced analysis and visualisation of its water resources, as well as to apply algorithms to be able to anticipate different scenarios.

The future water data lake of the Principado de Asturias, which Telefónica Tech is developing in collaboration with Xylem and Ídrica, will unify the information supplied by the different administrations and will integrate the data from the different services of the Principado de Asturias. These data will come from the sensors already deployed in the facilities of the Government of the Principado de Asturias for supply and sanitation, from municipal facilities, from the Cantabrian Hydrographic Confederation, from the AEMET (meteorology and forecasting) and from water quality analyses, among others.

Telefónica Tech will feed the technological infrastructure with this data so that the Principado de Asturias has the capacity to monitor water activity in real time and establish advanced analytical models with artificial intelligence for better decision-making and planning in the event of adverse or extraordinary scenarios. Likewise, the analysis of the data will provide in-depth knowledge of the integral water cycle of the territory that the Principado de Asturias will be able to share with local administrations and integrate it into a single platform for consultation.

This technological project will allow the Principado de Asturias, for example, to comprehensively manage and plan its resources in the medium to long term, control and characterise the available water resources, as well as prevent their evolution based on algorithms and artificial intelligence.

The information gathered in the data lake will also provide the intelligence necessary for the Principado de Asturias to manage flood scenarios thanks to the integration and hydrometeorological monitoring, its capacity to make short and medium-term predictions, the information on danger, vulnerability and risk included, and the generation of warning alerts and the monitoring and management of the event. Likewise, the data lake will provide the Principado de Asturias with the capacity to predict the evolution of water resources in order to face the different scenarios that may occur, as well as to monitor and implement measures and evaluate their effectiveness.

Alfredo Serret, global director of IoT at Telefónica Tech, said: ‘Water data lakes provide a competitive advantage to the autonomous communities because they provide them with valuable information to make better decisions. With this advanced technological project, the Principado de Asturias has taken a decisive step towards strengthening the resilience and management of its water resources by being able to anticipate possible extraordinary scenarios.

The data lake creation project is part of the contract for the ‘Service for the creation and operation of the digital platform of the integral water cycle of the Principado de Asturias, tendered by the Directorate General for Water of the Government of the Principado de Asturias and framed within the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (MRR).
