Telefónica is among the companies that are distinguished in the Top 10% for their commitment to sustainability on a global scale, and has been included for the third consecutive year in the Sustainability Yearbook 2023, which is produced annually by S&P Global. Both Telefónica Group and Telefónica Brasil are among the 20 global telcos included, of which only four are European.
More than 2,279 companies, representing more than 52% of global market capitalisation, participated in the Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA), and more than 7,800 companies in total were screened for possible inclusion in the Yearbook, although 708 were eventually included. To be in the Top 10% of its industry, a company’s score has to be higher than 54 on both environmental, social and governance issues, and its score must be within 5% to 10% of the score attained by the highest performing company in the industry.
Telefónica obtained a score of 86 (out of 100) in the CSA 2022, published on 13 December and used as a benchmark for inclusion in both the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and the Sustainability Yearbook, with a significant improvement in the social dimension. It should be noted that it also obtained the highest score, 100, in social and environmental reporting, environmental policy and management systems, human rights, labour indicators, materiality and network trust. Thus, the company is among the top 10 telcos worldwide according to the CSA and in second place in the DJSI Europe.
Sustainability, a cross-cutting theme
Telefónica, committed to people in its mission and purpose, includes sustainability as a cross-cutting theme in its strategy, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) defined in the United Nations 2030 Agenda, to build a greener future and help develop a fairer, more inclusive and prosperous society.
