Telefónica appoints Álvaro Echevarría and Piedad Álvarez de Arriba

• María García-Legaz will lead the new Transformation Office, from which she will support the COO of Telefónica.

Telefónica today announces the appointments of Álvaro Echevarría as Chief of Staff and Piedad Álvarez as the new Global Security Director.

Álvaro Echevarría will assume the role of Chief of Staff in the coming weeks and will join Telefónica’s Executive Committee. Echevarría is currently Deputy General Manager and Director of Institutional Relations and Corporate Security at Banco Sabadell, a company in which he has held various positions of responsibility over more than 22 years. He has a degree in Business Administration and Management from IQS-Universitat Ramon Llull, an MBA from ESADE, a PDG from IESE and a postgraduate degree in Banking Business from UPF.

Piedad Álvarez de Arriba joins Telefónica as Global Security Director, reporting to the Secretary General. She is the Chief Commissioner and, until now, Head of the Central Cybercrime Unit of the Judicial Police. Álvarez de Arriba has a professional career of more than 30 years in this organisation and is a leading figure in the world of Security Forces and cybercrime at an international level.

Telefónica has also announced that it will drive forward the company’s transformation process with the creation of the Transformation Office, to be led by María García-Legaz, supporting the COO in cross-cutting projects for the Group. García-Legaz, who is currently Chief of Staff, has extensive knowledge of Telefónica, where she has worked for over 30 years, and has held positions of responsibility in the areas of finance, investor relations and the Chairman’s office. From her new position she will support the company in its announced strategic review.

In addition, Miguel Sánchez, until now Global Security Director at Telefónica, will soon turn 65 and will end his professional career in the coming weeks. Telefónica would like to thank Miguel Sánchez for his support of Piedad Álvarez de Arriba during this transition period and congratulates him for his extraordinary contribution to the company’s security over the last nine years, as well as for his leadership in building Telefónica’s Global Security team, a benchmark in the market.
