César Carnicero

How long have you been with Telefónica and what is your assessment of your time here?

I have been with the company for 26 years, since April 97.

Subscribe to Telefónica’s blog and find out before anyone else.

It has been a very interesting time where I have been involved in making it possible for everyone to have a telephone line in their pocket with mobile phones, and to turn that into having quality internet access later on both at home and on their mobile handset.

Bringing people closer to each other first and then bringing them closer to information with the democratisation of the Internet.

Is there any project at Telefónica that you are particularly proud or satisfied with?

I played a small part between 1998 and 1999 in setting up the first switchboard that provided service to what was then called the “telephone helpline for battered women”, a small step that was the start of many things that were to come for the better.

I also participated in the 2G radio deployments, making possible a first level coverage network.

Later, on the service side, I am proud to have been part of the VoLTE project where, as project manager, we managed to bring 4G voice to our customers.

What do you think Telefónica has contributed to society?

Since Telefónica was born, it has brought people closer in one way or another. It first brought homes closer with fixed copper telephony. It continued to bring people closer with mobile telephony. Then it connected us to the Internet and democratised it with fibre optics and mobile broadband. This has allowed the massive arrival of information, social networks, artificial intelligence and everything that is yet to come.

Where do you see Telefónica in the future?

Bringing customers closer to content and democratising the use of technology.

Could you live without a mobile phone?

I don’t see it possible. We live connected to everyone and everything. Although you may be “out of coverage” for a moment, we always look for that human contact at the end of the day, even if it is via mobile phone. As I believe it should happen to everyone.

Help us solve one of the great enigmas of humanity: the potato omelette… With onion or without onion?

The omelette with onion, well done on the outside and not very well cooked on the inside.
