Unlearning in order to move forward: Connecting science and entertainment

Have you ever wondered how the magic we see on our screens is created? From the most immersive video games to films that transport us to other worlds, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are the fundamental pillars that make that magic possible.

Today, we will explore how these disciplines intertwine with the world of entertainment and how anyone can be part of this exciting adventure.

The STEM universe: Beyond the laboratories

When we think about science, we often imagine laboratories full of test tubes and complex formulas. However, the STEM universe is much broader and more creative than it seems. It extends from the design of characters and virtual worlds to the creation of special effects that defy reality.

Have you ever looked at the details of your favourite video game? Every texture, every movement, every interaction is the result of the application of scientific and technological principles. Engineers design the algorithms that bring the characters to life, mathematicians model the environments and artists create the images that immerse us in the story.

Creativity and critical thinking: The secret ingredients

But what happens when we add a pinch of creativity to the STEM equation? The answer is STEAM! By integrating the arts, history and design, we broaden our horizons and unlock new ways of approaching challenges.

Imagine designing a video game that is not only entertaining, but also teaches players about history or science. Or creating an app that combines music and maths to help children learn in a fun way. The possibilities are endless when we combine logic and creativity.

Lighting your own STEM path

How can we light our own path in the STEM world? The key is to cultivate curiosity, creativity and critical thinking. Curiosity drives us to ask ‘why?’ about things, creativity allows us to invent original solutions and critical thinking helps us make the best decisions. So, ask, invent and think!

To shine with your own light, you need to fill your ‘STEAM Backpack’ with essential ingredients:

  • Passion: Enthusiasm for learning and constant growth.
  • Curiosity: The insatiable desire to explore and discover.
  • Resilience: The ability to overcome obstacles and learn from mistakes.
  • Teamwork: Collaboration to achieve common goals.

My own path: A STEM adventure in the digital world

Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to explore various facets of the STEM world, from industrial engineering to strategic consulting and digital telecommunications. As head of video partnerships and head of innovation in the area of strategic partnerships, I lead relationships with OTT platforms such as Netflix and Amazon. I have learnt that the world changes very quickly and that we have to be ready to learn new things… and forget others!

My journey has taught me that the key to success in the STEM world is the ability to constantly ‘unlearn’. We must be open to new ideas, to challenge our own beliefs and to adapt to the changes around us. It’s like updating a video game to keep it fun and relevant.

Is STEM for me? Yes! No! Let’s Explore!

It’s normal to have doubts about science and technology. The important thing is to know that science and technology are for everyone!

Your STEM adventure starts now: Create your own recipe!

No matter what your interests or abilities, there is a place for you in the STEM world. Here are some tips to start your own adventure, your own recipe for STEAM success!:

  • Be curious: Ask ‘why?’ and ‘how?’ Explore the world around you and don’t be afraid to challenge established ideas.
  • Be creative: Look for innovative solutions to the problems you encounter. Don’t limit yourself to the obvious answers.
  • Learn from your mistakes: Setbacks are part of the journey. Don’t be discouraged by failures, use them as opportunities to grow and improve.
  • Collaborate: Work as a team with others to share ideas and knowledge. Together, we can achieve incredible things.
  • Critical thinking: Analyse information, evaluate different perspectives and make informed decisions.
  • Communication: Share your ideas clearly and effectively.

So, are you ready to challenge the impossible and connect science with entertainment? The future is in your hands! Remember that, like Edison, setbacks are part of the journey! So dream big!
