Telefónica/Vivo has developed the Rio+20 Vivo application for Android smartphones and tablets that provides all the information on the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, which is being held until 22nd June in Rio de Janeiro and which over 130 heads of state are attending.
The application, which can be downloaded for free from Google Play, allows access to details of the official and unofficial events at Rio+20, sorted by topic: climate change, sustainable energy, ICT, etc. The user can create a personalised calendar with reminders, obtain relevant information on airports, transport, accommodation, tourism, services etc. and find the best route to Rio+20. The application also offers the possibility of interacting with other participants and receiving all the information about Rio+20 through Twitter and event news in real time, through an agreement with Terra and Página 22.
TESTS OF CONNECTION 4G
The Ministry of Communications of Brazil, Telefónica|Vivo and Huawei have signed a collaboration agreement to make a 4G connection test at Riocentro, the main stage of the Rio+20 United Nations Conference.
Through this partnership, a total of 400 wireless modems have been distributed among the members of foreign delegations in order to give them access to the 4G/LTE network during the conference.
This is the first time that the 4G network will be used in an event of this calibre in Brazil. Telefónica|Vivo is providing the internet access to participants at Rio+20, in addition to participating in the operation and maintenance of the service. Huawei, in turn, will install all the 4G equipment and systems that will make the connection between the conference venue and the operator’s laboratories in Barra da Tijuca, from where the signal for the connection will be coming.
Users will be able to reach speeds up to 10 times higher than those obtained using 3G, with a total capacity of 150 Mbps downstream and 50 Mbps upstream.
Beyond Río+20, also available to users will be the operator’s 3G plus network, which has just been reinforced throughout the city with around 30 new antennae, as well as the expansion of 3G+ capacity in another 130 antennae to guarantee the quality of the service. This infrastructure will still be available to locals and visitors who attend other major events planned for Rio de Janeiro in the coming months. Telefónica|Vivo is the leader in 3G coverage in Brazil with more than 2800 municipalities, which is more than the sum of all the cities covered by the other operators put together.
During Rio+20, Telefónica|Vivo will also strengthen its 2G and 3G network in all the locations where the event will be taking place – Riocentro itself, Parque dos Atletas, Arena da Barra, Museo de Arte Moderno (Modern Art Museum), Arena do MAM, Mauá Pier and Galpão da Cidadania – in order to guarantee signal quality and network security in the city.
