Last night, over 350 executives, politicians, and campaigners from across the UK’s sustainability community gathered in London for the annual BusinessGreen Leaders Awards.

Over 200 (and may we add, very strong) entries were completed for this year’s awards. The judges were hugely impressed by the quality of all the shortlisted entries, praising the innovation and ingenuity displayed by the wide range of transformative sustainability projects being pursued by the UK’s leading companies. But as always there can be only one winner so drum roll please…

Telefonica UK won the Company of the Year category which also shortlisted M&S, The Cooperative and E.ON.{C}

Bill Eyres, Head of Sustainability, said “This is great win for Telefónica UK, and testament to all the great efforts that have been put in across the business since we embarked on our journey to sustainability leadership way back in 2008. It may seem a long time ago when we began thinking big, but through all the hard work that every directorate has put in, Telefónica UK  has been externally recognised for doing in three years what others have taken a decade to pull off; delivering industry-leadership across all aspects of sustainability. Last night’s award is proof of this, and so too is Forum for the Future‘s recent endorsement of our Leadership achievements.”

“There are so many milestones that we’ve all achieved over the last three years that really make me proud to work for Telefónica UK; from being the first network to gain the Carbon Trust standard, to launching Think Big. From developing Eco-Rating, to  breaking the work record with O2 Recycle. From our February Flex Working Day to agreeing Think Big objectives for everyone, from expending Think Big into Europe, to becoming the first ICT company anyway to achieve the carbon footprint. The list is too long to mention them all.”

“At the start of this journey in 2008, Ronan informed the business said that for sustainability to work in O2, it needed to be owned and driven by the company not the sustainability team. Our new Think Big Blueprint demonstrates how much everyone has embraced that concept. The commitments that each Directorate has made for the next three years are the backbone of our new sustainability strategy. And their impressive; not just from the sustainability team ‘s perspective and, but from our stakeholders’ perspectives too. This is why we won last night’s award.

Now, we’re really looking forward to maintaining our momentum, delivering these commitments and the next three years of Thinking Big!”

Congratulations!!
