For the third year in a row Telefónica is part of the Climate “A List” leading companies because of its strategy, transparent management, and initiatives aimed at responding to climate change, according to the CDP, the non-profit organization that collects and distributes this information every year for investors, corporations, and governments. The company is one of the nine Telcos that appear in this global level ranking, and the only Spanish one.

The CDP, which presented its annual report in Madrid today within the 2016 CDP Climate Change seminar, published the Climate “A List” with Telefónica as part of this group in recognition of its actions aimed at reducing emissions and mitigating climate change.

This ranking, prepared at the request of 827 investors with 100 billion dollars in assets, includes 193 companies from all around the world who represent 9% of all those that participate in the CDP. An independent group of experts evaluates the documentation presented by each of the companies and prepares this annual report which underscores the basic lines of corporate climate action.

The Iberian Peninsula’s list, made up of 16 entities, was also published during the act, presenting the main results of the report and handing out the awards in recognition of the leading Spanish companies in terms of climate change, among which was Telefónica.

For Enrique Blanco, Global CTO at Telefónica, who received the “A List” award on behalf of the company from the hands of Valvanera Ulargui, Director General of the Spanish Office for Climate Change, “this award is a recognition of our responsible and transparent management regarding the risks and opportunities associated to climate change. It also encourages us to keep promoting our energy efficiency so as to have the best telecommunications network in the world and to offer new services that help other industries be more efficient”.

Energy efficiency at Telefónica

Energy efficiency is already a priority for any industry not only because of what this contributes to the sustainability of businesses, but also to the planet. Telefónica has been working on this issue for years. Thus, during the period between 2010 and 2015 the company reduced its energy consumption in customer networks by 25%. And it will continue to decrease its bill and emissions with its new goals for the year 2020. It will also intensify its wager on renewable energies in its energy consumption, as well as on a complete offer of products and services that contribute towards the reduction of its customer’s emissions. These goals are, in turn, compatible with its growth strategy and network deployment.

The Executive Director of the CDP, Paul Simpson, congratulated all 193 “A List” companies that, in his words, “are leading the charge towards a low carbon future. Companies are the main actors needed so that the world economy can reach its climate goals, and the leadership of this group points the way for others to take bold measures and to take advantage of the many opportunities that present themselves”.

The leading companies in the climate change program showed high scores in all levels, and presented their specific actions that mark them as leaders, showing deep knowledge of the risks and opportunities related to climate change, as well as the start-up of spot-on strategies aimed at mitigating, or taking advantage, of these risks and opportunities. These companies have also verified their GEI emissions and have implemented reduction programs for said emissions with transversal approaches in them.
