How long have you been at Telefónica and what is your assessment of your time here?
I’ve been at Telefónica since October 2013, more than 10 years now… How quickly time has gone by! And when time passes quickly, it’s because you’ve been doing well.
During these more than 10 years at Telefónica de España, my professional career has revolved around innovation with a focus on different technologies and sectors: fibre optics and voice services (FTTH and IMS), virtualisation of network functions (Telco cloud), 5G, edge computing, connected mobility and Industry 4.0. I certainly can’t complain about the variety of subjects I’ve worked on… and the great colleagues I’ve learned from.
Is there any project at Telefónica that you are particularly satisfied with or proud of?
All projects make you grow, especially in the field of innovation where the topics and clients vary in each project. If I had to choose one, I would choose the deployment of the first 5G+ network with Network Slicing in Europe, a project carried out in Vigo at the beginning of 2021 where, once again, we were pioneers and set a precedent for a future-proof technology that is already beginning to materialise (and which will open up numerous opportunities for all sectors).
What do you think Telefónica has contributed to society?
Our day-to-day life relies on telecommunications networks, something that many see as ‘magic’: they are there, you can’t see them, but they work perfectly and are essential to our society. Telefónica provides, day by day, second by second, an incalculable value that we often do not value enough: teleworking, a video call on a family member’s birthday, a connected factory or office, a Friday night film at home, a volunteering activity… Telefónica is that and much more: Telefónica is connectivity, technology, digitalisation, data, security, people, closeness and trust, every day, for everyone.
Where do you see Telefónica in the future?
I see our company evolving, but around the same values: Innovation, People and Technology. A Telefónica that is always at the cutting edge, with people at the centre.
Could you live without a mobile phone? I would like to answer yes, but the reality is different, as I use my smartphone for almost everything: listening to music, paying with different cards, carrying my digital driving licence, turning on the lights at home, reading news, emails, etc…
Of course, being hyperconnected also means having the responsibility to know how to disconnect at certain times, and I try to do so, although it is often difficult.
Help us solve one of the great enigmas of humanity: the potato omelette… With onion or without onion?
I’ll take both… But if I have to choose… With a little bit of onion!
Nominate other colleagues to appear in this section
I nominate Pablo Cañada Toledo and Beatriz Alba Toledo: two colleagues with very different activities, but with a lot of talent, ability and especially companionship.
