The Global Mobile Awards are one of the many pearls of the Barcelona Mobile World Congress; a few awards marking 21 years in top form.

These awards, driven by the GSMA, have broken its own record this year by having registered a total of 930 applications for all categories, of which only 285 aspire to receive one of the 40 awards of the announcement.

In this Edition, the Telefónica 2010-2020 Global Energy Efficiency Program was a finalist in The Green Mobile category. The multinational, as with any Telco company, does not have a significant environmental impact: its carbon footprint is approximately 2 million tonnes of CO2 and its energy consumption is about 6 terawatt/hour. Even so, it has committed to achieve more and more with fewer resources. This is the purpose of the programme, whose objectives are to save energy and emissions.

In this Edition, the Telefónica 2010-2020 Global Energy Efficiency Program was a finalist in The Green Mobile category. Even so, it has committed to achieve more and more with fewer resources. This is the purpose of the programme, whose objectives are to save energy and emissions.

To achieve these objectives, Telefónica promotes the implementation of energy efficiency projects through equipment modernisation, efficient energy use, consumption control, efficient lighting…, as well as promoting the use of renewable energy, which already represents 15% of its consumption in its premises using different strategies (micro-generation in remote areas, guaranteed power purchase from renewable sources, medium-term agreements with large renewable plants…).

The Corporate Office for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency of Telefónica promotes this efficient energy use and identifies opportunities where CO2 emissions can be reduced. For their part, Energy Managers are responsible for developing country projects. They belong to Operations teams and work closely with the Office.

In parallel, in a newly hyper-connected world, Telefónica takes advantage of the great potential offered by ICTs in order to reduce the environmental impact across the remaining industries and contribute to a low-carbon economy.

Thus, there is already a vast number of companies from different sectors using green solutions by Telefónica, smart fleet management services, intelligent buildings, cloud computing, etc. And thanks to our platform aimed at smart cities, Spain is a leader in smart cities.

In addition, Telefónica aspires to three other awards, namely Best Mobile Innovation for Emerging Markets by the Connected Rural School program of the Fundación [Foundation] Telefónica Vivo; Broadband for All: Outstanding LTE Contribution with the Movistar 4GLTE “the 4G Power in real-time” project, and the Mobile Connect for Authentication & Identity award, whose nomination is shared with the Spanish division of Vodafone and Orange.

The  Glomo Awards ceremony, presented by Suzi Perry, the face of BCC for Formula 1, will be take place on Tuesday, February 23 at 1.30 pm in Hall 4, Auditorium 2. The high point is the Mobile World Live TV which can be enjoyed in more than 60 screens at the event and in 24,000 rooms in 180 hotels across the city.

The awards jury comprises experts, analysts, academics and journalists, and in some cases, representatives of mobile operators.
