Data Transparency Lab (DTL) has launched its second annual Call for Grants, aimed towards the development of software tools to encourage data transparency online. The submission deadline ends on April 30th. The list of awarded projects will be published at the beginning of June.

This year, DTL will award 6-8 grants to academic institutions worldwide. Such grants come in the form of a gross amount of 50,000 Euro.

The Call’s scope includes research areas involving the development of tools and software platforms to foster transparency in data collection and usage online, as well as to preserve user’s privacy across different areas: e-commerce, advertising, recommendation systems, search systems, content etc.

Nikolaos Laoutaris, Senior Researcher at the Scientific unit at Telefonica I+D, is one of the two co-Chairs of of this Reasearch Committee. The Research Committee is composed of relevant researchers and names across companies, universities and institutions worldwide. Telefonica I+D’s Daniel Coloma will be participating as Chief Technology Officer of the Data Transparency Lab.

The winners will be offered an opportunity to present their work at the Data Transparency Lab Annual Conference, which will take place at Columbia University, on 17-19 Nov this year.

The Data Transparency Lab is a collaborative effort founded by Telefonica I+D, Mozilla, MIT Connection Science and Open Data Institute. It supports research in in tools, data, and methodologies for shedding light on the use of personal data by online services, and to empower users to be in

control of their personal data online.
