Recommendations for better writing

Every day we read articles, news items or emails that we find interesting, but as we go along, they become an endless brick wall that we find difficult to finish or even understand.

David Salamanca Jamauca

Thus, we begin to accumulate bad experiences with reading, causing us to put aside this good habit that helps us, among other things, to improve our memory, enhance our concentration and expand our vocabulary.

I am Colombian. In 2015 I moved from Santiago de Cali to Santiago de Chile. I have been a social communicator since 2012 and I have a Master’s degree in Strategic Communication, Digital Marketing and Business.

I have worked for the media and was currently part of the Corporate Communications team at Movistar Chile. From here, I let my imagination and creativity run wild to connect collaborators with the brand and the company. I like cooking, travelling, music and watching series or thrillers. That’s why, today from my role in Corporate Communications, I want to share some recommendations with you that may be useful when writing. And so, help to produce more dynamic texts that enhance and facilitate reading.

Let’s get started!

Tips to improve your writing

When writing an email or a message, try to answer the ‘5 Ws’: what, who, when, where and why.

  • For example, what do you need the recipient of the email to do? For whom or for what area? What is the deadline or when do you need it by? And finally, share the reasons why it is important.
  • This will help you make it easier to read, solve your need faster and reduce the possibility of sending a new email with details that were not clear to the reader.
  • When you are in the writing process, avoid overloading with too much information. Here the rule of less is more applies.
  • Write one idea in each paragraph. This will allow the message to be better understood and the information to be as accurate as possible.
  • Finally, once you have finished writing, reread the text and check the spelling.
  • As a personal tip, I recommend that you read syllable by syllable, so you will reduce errors or the omission of letters or extra words. For example, I use this technique when the words are long or have peculiar characteristics. Shakira also used it in her hit ‘te-fe-li-ci-to-qué-bien-actúas’ (I’m so happy how well you act).
  • However, if you are going to write for social networks, it is better to do it in a timeless way, avoiding the words yesterday, today or tomorrow. Because this will always depend on the moment in which it is read. For example, I recommend that you write: This Wednesday 12th March and not, tomorrow 12th March.

I hope you find these recommendations useful and can put them into practice!
