How long have you been with Telefónica and what is your assessment of your time here?

Nearly 25 years, almost all my professional life here, for the jobs I have had to do, I am very grateful and very exciting because I have always been at the forefront of technology, always with super new things, first with mobile technologies 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G… The transition from ADSL to fibre, virtual reality technologies, etc…

Is there any project at Telefónica that you feel particularly satisfied with or proud of?

Well, the truth is that I have so many, it’s impossible to single out just one. I am very satisfied with the projects in the medical sector, with the Quirón clinic in Malaga and with the Trías y Pujol Hospital in Badalona, where we use communications technology and virtual reality in the sector. I would also like to mention one of the last ones in the sports sector with Atlético de Madrid and FC Barcelona.

What do you think Telefónica has contributed to society?

In my humble opinion, there are many. Telefónica in the world, and especially in Spain, where I live, has democratised technology everywhere in Spain. You have excellent mobile or fibre optic coverage, something that seems super normal in Europe, but which is not the reality.

We are the envy of the world in this respect, and this is being a differential factor in the development of the country. Nowadays, communications are more important than physical communications or many other factors.

Where do you see Telefónica in the future?

As always, I see it leading technological progress in the countries where it operates, and helping citizens and companies to move forward. Many people don’t know this, but many services (such as prepaid services and IPTV services) were pioneered by Telefónica, and Spain was a pioneer in the world.

Could you live without a mobile phone?

Not really. I am hyper-connected and, although it may seem strange, I like it. I like the fact that I can be contacted and I can do the same in real time.

Help us solve one of humanity’s great enigmas: the potato omelette… With onion or without onion?

Well, despite the controversy it generates, I prefer it with onion, and with a little tabasco to top it all off, I’m sure the purists will want to kill me.

What crazy idea would you like Telefónica to do for its centenary?

I’d like everyone to be able to try out the TV service we have, I think it’s great, the last seven days seem to me to make a difference… I’d give it away to people for free for a while.

Nominate another colleague to appear in this section

I nominate Alejandro Alonso Portero, a young, enthusiastic and hard-working guy. In Telefonica we should have many like him.

In #Thespanishomelettething tag section we interview Telefónica’s employees on a variety of topics, while trying to solve one of humanity’s greatest dilemmas.
