Minors have become active users of a digital environment that was not originally designed for them. Moreover, the widespread use of digital devices and services has lowered the age at which minors first engage with technology. Surrounded by technology from an early age, newer generations navigate the digital environment intuitively. However, intuitive use does not necessarily equate to critical or responsible use of technology.
The combination of a digital space not designed for minors and the lack of awareness regarding responsible use has led to a range of risks to which children are exposed online.

Two Decades of Commitment to Protecting Minors in the Digital Space
Since 2005, Telefónica has been committed to creating a safe digital environment for minors. The company took its first steps at a conference organized by the European Commission on the risks of mobile phone use by minors. This event led to the GSME (GSMA’s predecessor) taking responsibility and signing the “Framework Agreement on Safer Mobile Use by Children.” Three years later, recognizing the dangers of distributing sexual content involving minors online, the GSMA established the “Mobile Alliance Against Child Sexual Abuse Content”, of which Telefónica is a member. In line with this, the company blocks child sexual abuse material following the guidelines of the Internet Watch Foundation. Furthermore, Telefónica joined the co-regulatory initiative “CEO Coalition to Create a Better and Safer Internet for Children,” led by the European Commission, and became a signatory to the GSMA’s “ICT Principles for the Safe Use of Connected Devices and Online Services by Children and Young People in the EU” self-regulatory code.
Currently, Telefónica participates in various initiatives focused on the protection of minors. In addition, the company offers resources, training programs, and initiatives for minors, families, and educators in collaboration with public agencies to raise awareness and promote responsible use of technology. Lastly, Telefónica also provides tools that enhance the protection of minors in the digital environment.
